When it was time for Ruby to go to William Franz Elementary School, the state capital found a way to slow the integration down. Ruby had to go to her old school. In November, the Louisiana government let the four black children integrate to the white schools. Judge Write, a United Stated District Judge helped to get this integration started. When he saw the anger of the white people in New Orleans, he asked the government to send marshals to protect the black students.
On her first day of school, Ruby was escorted to school by four federal marshals. She spent the whole day in the principal's office while the white parents pulled their kids out of school. On her way home that day, Ruby saw all the protesters. They were holding up signs and chanting things like: "Go Home", and "We don't want to integrate". On her second day of school, Ruby met her teacher Mrs. Barbara Henry. She was a young teacher from Boston. She helped Ruby in school because she was nice and caring.
Because Ruby was a part of the school integration, the owners of the grocery store at the end of her block told her family to stay away. Her father was fired from his job. Even though her family was treated poorly, many peopled from all over the United States mailed money to the Bridges because of what they saw in the news. Ruby received clothes, toys, and books for school. While at school, Ruby was lonely because she went to class, recess, and lunch all by herself. She had trouble sleeping at night and felt like she was being punished.
